When planning the installation of a pond or water garden, several factors should be taken into consideration:

Site or Location:
  • How much sun or shade will it recieve?
  • Is the terrain flat, sloped, uneven?
Size & Shape:
  • Is the desired size in scale with the surrounding landscape?
  • Is it going to be round, square for a more formal look or is it going to be freeform for a natural appearance?
Type:
  • Is it going to be a PLANTS ONLY pond?
  • Is it going to be a pond full of plants and fish?
  • Is it going to be wildlife pond.
  • Is it going to be a KOI pond?
Many first time pond owners believe that a smaller pond is easier to maintain than a larger one. In reality, this is not the case. The larger the aquatic ecosystem, the easier it is for it to maintain the plants and animal life which, in turn, creates a more balanced ecosystem. A larger pond is also allows for more choices in design and selection of plants and fish. The most common remark that I hear from new pond owners, after they have had their pond for a while is, "I wish we had made it bigger!".
